Dangers of Social Media, Grooming + Sexual Exploitation

Dangers of Social Media, Grooming + Sexual Exploitation

About

Online child sexual exploitation is a growing concern in Canada, particularly during the pandemic. Nearly 100% of Canadian youth use the internet daily or own a smartphone.

What can we do as parents? Take action.

One Body Village Canada, a registered Canadian charity that supports sexually exploited children in Southeast Asia, is hosting a free online education session for parents and children aged 12 and older. This session aims to raise awareness about child exploitation and help prevent our children from becoming victims.

The 1.5-hour information session will cover:

  • Who is at risk?
  • What are the indicators of exploitation?
  • How can we prevent it?
  • What resources are used in human trafficking?
  • What is sexual exploitation?
  • What are the dangers of social media?
  • What is involved in online grooming and sextortion?
  • What to do if your child has been victimized

The session will include breakout rooms where children can discuss their experiences and concerns about their online activity, while parents will have the opportunity to speak openly with each other and ask specific questions. Both breakout rooms will be led by a representative from One Body Village Canada.
